US Officials Raise Questions About Malaysia Plane Shootdown and Russians

U.S. offi­cials say Russ­ian sep­a­ratists, believed to have used a Buk anti­air­craft mis­sile sys­tem to shoot down a Malaysian air­liner in east­ern Ukraine yes­ter­day prob­a­bly needed Russ­ian assis­tance to make it work. A Pen­ta­gon spokesper­son says it strains credulity to believe that sep­a­ratists could have used the mobile launched medium range sur­face to air mis­sile sys­tem with­out Russ­ian sup­port and tech­ni­cal help. U.S. intel­li­gence and crash inves­ti­ga­tors will want to know whether Russ­ian mil­i­tary per­son­nel were involved, in train­ing Ukrain­ian mil­i­tants or actu­ally oper­at­ing the system.
